Hunger Busters’ mission is to provide food and comfort with compassion to hungry people, and it has
proudly done so continuously since November of 2000.
The Hunger Busters delivery truck provides unparalleled mobility enabling us to move about the city of
Dallas to bring healthy sustenance to those in need, wherever they may be. Beginning as a mobile, street
level feeding operation for those without homes, Hunger Busters has since expanded in size and scope,
offering a broad range of programs that improve lives day after day.
Today, in addition to serving the homeless, Hunger Busters serves members of the community struggling
to make ends meet, including hungry homebound senior citizens and families living in low-income
housing. Hunger Busters continues to search for new ways to serve the hungry, and recently identified a
serious need that we felt compelled to address.
It was brought to Hunger Busters’ attention that a subsidized school lunch or after-school snack is the
last meal many Dallas elementary school children eat until their subsidized school breakfast the next
morning. Because of circumstances at home, many of these children simply are not served dinner.
Despite the critical need for a third meal of the day, many children are not receiving it, and if they are, it is
served at an after-school program and typically consists of a sugary or salty snack and a soft drink or
juice.
After learning of the need of Dallas’ most innocent hungry citizens, Hunger Busters established “Feed the
Need – After School Program”, to provide these children with a much deserved nutritious and sustaining
third meal of the day.
The after school programs where Hunger Busters serves offer structured, educational activities between
the hours of 3-6PM during the academic school year. They are operated by groups including the YMCA
and Central Dallas Ministries and serve a majority of the students in need. Our Feed the Need – After
School Program menu consists of a hearty sandwich, applesauce/fruit cup, cookie and banana.
Improving the quality of the food served gives these children the “fuel” they need to do their best in
school and has the added benefit of helping to address the issue of obesity and related health problems.
When someone is hungry it is hard to think of anything else. How can a hungry child be expected to
perform well in school?
Hunger Busters is passionately committed to providing fresh, filling, and healthy meals to the hungry
citizens of Dallas – our neighbors in need. For seven years Hunger Busters has been on the go, on the
front lines, addressing the diffuse areas of hunger existing in the city of Dallas.
As the organization forges ahead to combat hunger, the needs around the city become more evident.
Hunger Busters continues to develop new programs and partnerships year after year, so it can serve
more healthy meals to more citizens throughout Dallas. In 2008, with the generous aid and series of
vigilant new initiatives, Hunger Busters will serve 120,000 meals.
Hunger Busters vision is to expand its mission until no neighbor is hungry.
