Every Kid Wants A New Bed When They Grow Up
Any parent will tell you flies when your children are growing up. Sure it may not seem that way when you’re endlessly changing nappies, but that phase passes quickly enough, then they’re out of the crib and into their own Bed.
I have twin girls, Mary and Stephanie, and they just turned ten. Up until now, they’ve shared a room and slept in Bunk Beds. But both of them came to us a month ago and said that since they were big girls now -double digits- they wanted their own bedrooms and their own Beds. This isn’t exactly easy to accommodate; since we live in a two bedroom flat and I’m not about to give up my room, we had to get creative. We do have a small den, I decided that we’d give that up in order to make a very compact third bedroom. My wife and I have laptop computers, so the separate room with a desk wasn’t necessary any longer.
The next problem was furnishing the bedrooms. The Bunk Beds had to go. I suppose we could have separated them, but we really wanted it to be a clean start for the girls, so we decided to replace them altogether. We wanted something special, new Beds that were in the girls’ favorite colors, but also nicely styled and well built. We shopped around a while and had almost given up until my wife showed me a lilac junior Bed with a paneled footboard and headboard she found on the bedroomworld.co.uk web site. The drawers mounted beneath the Bed would go a long way toward solving storage issues in that rather small former den and an attractive wardrobe we found online would take care of the lack of a closet. The Beds were bright, available with a pink mattress and best of all, prices were discounted, in pounds and we were able to order next day delivery. While the girls were at my mum’s for the weekend, we quickly repainted the rooms, got rid of the Bunk Beds, moved in their new lilac Beds and, as a finishing touch, hung fairy lights in both rooms. When Mary and Stephanie came back home, they were ecstatic. I was afraid there might be a fight over the bigger room, but Mary was intrigued by the wardrobe and opted for the smaller room (we just read The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, which may have had something to do with that).
I’m trying to make the best of this stage because next thing you know, the twins are going to have their driving license and will be turning up their noses and demanding that I get rid of the old estate wagon.
